Hammond B3 giant to appear with Philadelphia trio
A force in the revival of the Hammond B3 organ as a jazz instrument, legendary jazz great Joey DeFrancesco appears with his trio for three nights in Vancouver January 9-11 at Cellar Jazz. The Philadelphia based ensemble, which features DeFrancesco (B3) along with Bryon Landham (drums) and Pat Bianchi (keyboard), will perform two shows nightly.
Winner of five consecutive DownBeat Critics Poll awards, (2002-06), Joey DeFrancesco is legendary in jazz circles for his skill, harmonic depth.
Born into a musical background, Joey’s father, Papa John DeFrancesco was an organ player, while his multi-instrumentalist grandfather, Joe DeFrancesco, worked with Tommy Dorsey. Joey was performing paying gigs by the age of ten, working with artists such as Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes.
Joey has gone on to release over 20 solo albums and built an impressive list of performance/recording credits, with famed jazz notables such as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvin Jones and John McLaughlin.
