Jazz Series to Feature the Gerry Hebert Quartet

The University of Calgary Music Department’s ‘Monday Night Jazz Series’ continues this month when the Gerry Hebert Quartet performs on January 26 at the University Theatre at 8:00 pm.

Led by Calgary saxophonist, composer and educator Gerry Hebert, the quartet returns to the University Theatre for the first time since their successful CD launch last March. The Beat Niq Sessions Volume 2: Constructive Interference (Plunge Records 2008), has received extensive airplay and glowing reviews. Inspired by sessions at Beat Niq Jazz & Social club, the album showcases Hébert’s original compositions along with select covers by the Beatles, Peter Gabriel and Oscar Peterson. The album followed up Hebert’s debut release in 2003, The Beat Niq Sessions Volume 1: 6th Ave & 2am.

Gerry Hébert has been presenting concerts in Calgary and area actively since 1997. A dedicated musician and educator, Gerry was a founding member of The Swinging Bovines, a jazz saxophone quartet who released 3 CDs and performed over 500 concerts on tours across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Currently, Gerry is Artistic Director of the Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club and the founder and the director of the Calgary Youth Jazz Orchestra.

A graduate of the University of Calgary, Gerry has been featured on 14 CD recordings and performed in many of Calgary’s leading musical productions including: The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, The Prime Time Big Band, The Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Evita and The Banff Centre Jazz Orchestra. He has also performed with numerous leading jazz musicians including: Rob McConnell, Moe Koffman, P.J. Perry, Hugh Fraser, Diana Krall, Bobby Shew, Guido Basso, Gary Guthman, Chris Potter, Kenny Werner, Dave Douglas, Alan Broadbent, and Maria Schneider.
