Cross border jazz merges visiting artists with Canadian musicians

Saxophone giant Ernie Watts finishes up his western Canadian tour in Nanaimo tonight and tomorrow, Feb 9 &10, with a performance this evening at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre. Mr. Watts will be accompanied by three faculty members at Vancouver Island University’s music department, with Bob Murphy (piano), Ken Lister (bass) and Jesse Cahill (drums).

Watts, who traveled in the area last year with Charlie Haden, is working with Canadian musicians for this tour, having appeared this past weekend in Edmonton with Chris Andrew (piano), Mike Lent (bass) and Sandro Dominelli, as well as at the Cellar in Vancouver with the Brad Turner Trio.

Two-time Grammy Award winner Ernie Watts is one of the most versatile and prolific saxophone players on the music scene. In a diverse career that has spanned more than 40 years, he has been featured on more than 500 recordings by artists from Cannonball Adderley to Frank Zappa, always exhibiting his unforgettable trademark sound.

Mr. Watts is also slated to conduct a workshop for students of the music program at Vancouver Island University tomorrow at 10 am in the Choral Room.
