Pianist Kevin Curtis to Debut New Jazz Compositions
Jazz Winnipeg’s Nu Sounds Series continues on Sunday, Feb. 22 with a concert performance by pianist Kevin Curtis, who will lead an exciting young group of players for an evening of original contemporary music.
Pianist and composer Kevin Curtis has been performing for more than 15 years, the versatile musician equally at home in both the classical and jazz idioms. The talented player has toured throughout North and Central Americas, Europe, and North Africa.
A student of University of Manitoba since 2005 been working toward a music degree in classical composition. His work draws on a range of influences, from jazz artists Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Keith Jarrett, to new music composers such as Iannis Xenakis, György Ligeti, and Luciano Berio, as well as funk, hip-hop and world music artists.
For his Nu Sounds Series concert, Curtis will debut new jazz compositions as written specifically for a select group of musicians. The pianist describes the music himself as “contemporary, harmonically advanced music incorporating a collective approach to improvisation.”
