Festival Celebrates Italian Jazz & Culture

This year Art of Jazz honours Italian jazz and culture. The Distillery will be transformed into the festival nella distilleria where live jazz is everywhere and the cobblestone streets are filled with sweet aroma of Italian cooking, fine wines, beer, street art and more.

Roberta Gambarini Vocal Jazz Workshop – 12:00 PM

Art of Jazz is thrilled to have Roberta Gambarini conduct a 2 hour workshop in the Thompson Landry Gallery 2. Doors open at 11:30 am and the workshop runs from 12:00-2:00pm. Gambarini workshops typically explore the art of improvisation, vocal technique, methods of practice, repertoire choices and proper lead sheets. Pianist Don Thompson and bassist Neil Swainson will accompany Ms. Gambarini. Please bring your charts.

A Joyful Noise – The Big Harmonica Concert Lesson with master instrumentalist Mike Stevens
Where: Boiler House Stage

Don’t miss this interactive harmonica session that will have audiences of all ages playing the “harp”. You’ll walk away having learned how to play at least three songs and understanding the history of the harmonica from traditional country and blues all the way to far out looping. Bring your harmonica or purchase a diatonic harmonica in the key of C at the show for $10

Pat Martino Organ Trio w/Tony Monaco & Louis Tsamours – 3:00 PM

Grupo Vocal Desandann – 5:00 PM

This 8 member choir from Camagüey, Cuba, sing a cappella music with echoes of African-American Gospel, Haitian roots music and the large-scale vocal acrobatics of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, all driven by Cuban percussion.

with DJ Billy Bryans plus The Cuban All-Stars and special guest Jane Bunnett

This high octane Cuban Dance Party features the Canadian debut of the 16 piece all-women’s historic orchestra Anacaona, plus the Cuban All-Stars with special guest Jane Bunnett

Italian native Gambarini is an almost improbably complete singer. Her warm, velvety tone and scat-singing facility recall Fitzgerald; her near-flawless pitch and vast range are reminiscent of Vaughan; and her impeccable diction and the salty spin she puts on vowels conjure the young McRae.
