Tyler Hornby Receives 2 Award Nominations, Appears at Festival
Calgary based contemporary jazz drum master Tyler Hornby has been nominated for two awards at the Montreal Jazz Festival 2009, receiving nominations for the prestigious General Motors Grand Jazz Award and Radio-Canada’s Galaxie Rising Star Award.
Hornby will also be featured in concert during the Montreal Jazzfest’s Les Soirées jazz TD Canada Trust series on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 7pm and 9pm. Joining him for the performances are fellow Calgary jazz greats Aaron Young (guitar) and Kodi Hutchinson (bass), along with Montreal’s Joel Miller (saxophone).
In demand for his highly skilled and versatile chops, Tyler has performed/recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz, such as Bob Mintzer, Frank Mantooth, Alain Caron, Randy Brecker, Hugh Fraser and Ralph Bowen, and more.
Currently Hornby is with electric jazz ensemble Terrain (he’s a founding member) and the vocal/guitar duo Sillan & Young, both groups maintaining busy performance and recording calendars. Stepping out as leader, Tyler released the critically acclaimed CD, Shadows of a Brighter Day in 2005, the album featuring his composition and performance talents. His compositions have also been showcased in productions by Decidedly Jazz Danceworks.
Hornby is a regarded educator who’s on the jazz faculty of Calgary’s Mount Royal College, and acts as Director for the annual summer Drumset Educational Camp.
