Petition & Rally Supports Blues Venue

Winnipeg blues fans are building momentum in a bid to stop the rumored demolition of the Windsor Hotel, home to the city’s blues scene.

Forming the Facebook group “Save the Windsor Hotel-Petition with us!!!” the group have mobilized a petition and are seeking signatures of support. A public rally is also planned for Saturday, January 9th from 2-4pm at the hotel on 187 Garry St.

Up until a couple of years ago, the Windsor was a decades-long home to the city’s blues music scene, having hosted some of the brightest stars in the biz. The last couple of years have seen the hotel fall to disrepair and neglect, prompting the the City of Winnipeg to shut the building down due to several safety and other violations and forcing about 50 long-term residents to relocate.

Originally built as a boarding house in 1903, the Le Claire Hotel (as it came to be known), hosted such illustrious guests as actor-comedian Charlie Chaplin, who was a guest on numerous occasions when he was still a vaudeville performer.

In the 1980’s live blues found a home at the Windsor and has since that time featured top-notch local and international international blues as well as providing a starting point for up-and-coming artists.

Those who wish to sign the petition will find it at the Facebook group “Save the Windsor Hotel-Petition with us!!!”
