City of Calgary Supports Cantos Music Foundation Initiative
The City of Calgary has approved a $25 million commitment toward the building of a National Music Centre on the site of the King Edward Hotel in the East Village.
The City will release a “seed money” payment of $2.5 million that will allow work to continue on the design with the chosen architectural team. The balance will come contingent on commitments from the provincial and federal governments as well as corporate and public support.
An initiative of the Cantos Music Foundation, Cantos’ vision of the National Music Centre is an 80,000-square-foot facility that will integrate the Cantos Music Collection, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Collection, recording studios, education, public programming, performance space, public radio broadcasting space, a live music venue, music and wellness research centre, artists-in-residence programs and more.
