Bassist Simon Fisk to Present and Perform World Class Jazz

Calgary musician and composer Simon Fisk is once again putting together another world class ensemble for a weekend of top-notch jazz February 15 & 16 at Beat Niq Jazz club.

Presented by Fisk’s Plunge Records and One is the Water Productions, the Harvard Wiik Trio and Halifax jazz drum legend Jerry Granelli will perform two nights at the city’s premier jazz club.

Fisk and Granelli will open the performances in a duo format before Harvard Wiik Trio take the stage, then follow it up with a quintet performance with 2 drummers, 2 bassists (with Fisk doubling on cello) and piano.

Fisk, an accomplished jazz bassist and cellist, is the owner of the successful record label and internet broadcast company, Plunge Records, as well as One Is The Water Productions, which presents jazz events across Western Canada. The artist has made a name for himself in Canada and beyond for his spellbinding performances and composition, with its unique blend of folk/spiritual/free improvised/art rock/electronics. Along the way he’s gained the respect of audiences, critics and fellow musicians alike. He’s released numerous recordings as leader and is in demand as both a performing and in the studio. Fisk’s latest recordings feature his current trio with Edmonton pianist Chris Gestrin and drummer Jerry Granelli.

The Norwegian contingent, with Havard Wiik (piano), Ole Morten Vågan (bass) and Håkon Mjåset Johansen (drums), are making the stop in Calgary along their Canadian tour. The Håvard Wiik Trio has been a bright light on the Norwegian jazz scene since 2001. The trio concentrates solely on the compositions of Wiik, focused on rhythm and abstract aspects of the classic piano trio setting.

Halifax-based percussionist-composer Jerry Granelli pioneered world jazz fusion and electro-acoustic percussion during the 60’s hippie era, established the music department at the Naropa Institute in Boulder in ’76, and has had a continuous teaching career around the globe since. In the early ’80s he performed and recorded in a trio with Ralph Towner and Gary Peacock for ECM and has recorded as a leader for Evidence, Intuition, ITM, Koch, Love Slave and other labels. Among others, Granelli has performed and recorded with Mose Allison, Jay Clayton, Jane Ira Bloom, Glen Moore, Anthony Cox, Dave Friedman, and Jamie Saft, as well as projects with Bill Frisell, Robben Ford, Julian Priester, Charlie Haden, Kenny Garrett, and Buck 65.

While in the city, pianist Wiik and drummer Granelli will join Fisk in the studio to create a new trio album to be released on Plunge Records.
