A Road to Remember Showcases Hornby’s Compositional Talents

Calgary based jazz drummer Tyler Hornby celebrates the release of his new CD, A Road to Remember (Chronograph Records), this Friday & Saturday, March 12 & 13, at Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club.

Considered one of the nation’s most versatile and contemporary drummers, Hornby exemplifies a melodic sense combined with taste, control, and rhythmic finesse.

The well-traveled musician has toured North and South Americas and in Europe, performing at jazz festivals, clubs, and concerts. A Road to Remember follows his debut acoustic jazz album Shadows of a Brighter Day , which received rave reviews and was selected for a National Campus Compilation entitled Dig Your Roots. Both releases showcase Hornby’s composition skills with post-bop, contemporary and odd meter influences along with unique harmonic and melodic twists.

In addition to playing with his own quartet, Tyler has performed with such jazz greats as Bob Mintzer, Ingrid Jensen, Frank Mantooth, Alain Caron, Randy Brecker, Hugh Fraser, Tommy Banks, Shelly Berg, Ralph Bowen and Maciek Grzywacz, to name a few. Tyler was also music director for Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and is a co-founder and member of electric jazz group Terrain, and drummer for urban acoustic group Sillan & Young.

While maintaining a busy performing schedule Tyler also teaches for the Mount Royal College Jazz Diploma Program, and is the director of the Drumset Educational Camp, held in Calgary each summer. After completing his B.Mus In Jazz Studies from the University of Calgary, Tyler obtained his Masters Degree in Jazz Performance/Pedagogy (2006) at the University of Colorado (Boulder) where he studied composition with Grammy Award winning pianist Chip Stephens.
