Calgary Jazz Orchestra
2010-11 Concert Season

Concert Season to Feature Jazz From the Masters

Created in 2004, Calgary Jazz Orchestra has been pumping out the hits since they formed in 2004 under the leadership of trumpeter Johnny Summers. The Calgary based Big Band is made up of 16 members from the professional music community and has been pleasing audiences since that time. The orchestra features an acoustic Big Band sound. Arrangements are provided by members of the ensemble.

The ensemble kicks off their 2010-11 season with a series of family-friendly concerts that’s sure to keep the fires burning, with the repertoire for each concert to feature the music of jazz masters Oscar Peterson, Charles Mingus, Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington, along with a special concert of music of pop culture.

Kicking off the season is the September 26 concert at the home venue for the ensemble, the River Park Church, at 3818 – 14a St SW. Doors will open at 6:30pm and the show begins at 7pm. The opening concert will feature the music of legendary Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson and the music of bassist/composer Charles Mingus for a great mix of mainstream jazz and hard bop.

Summers says of CJO “We are spontaneous, energetic and fun, and we want to move the audience through emotion and sound.”
