River Park Church, Calgary

Exquisite Pairing of Canadian Jazz Talent

Two of Canada’s leading jazz greats, saxophonist P.J. Perry (Edmonton) and trumpeter Kevin Dean (Montreal) will perform in an all-star quintet on May 17th at River Park Church in Calgary. Joining Perry and Dean are pianist Mark Eisenman, bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Andre White.

All members of the quintet are seasoned professionals who have performed with internationally celebrated jazz players, and all have been involved in writing the music for the tour. Their individual accolades reach far and wide, from awards as musicians, composers and recording producers, to Dean seeing his composition, Andre’s Footsteps, selected to celebrate the United Nations’ 50th anniversary.

Kevin Dean helped develop Canada’s first university accredited jazz studies program at St. Francis-Xavier University; he is currently a professor of music (jazz studies) at McGill.

Often rated by jazz critics as possibly the best saxophonist Canada has ever produced, Calgary-born, Edmonton based P.J. Perry is a favourite of audiences worldwide for his dynamic style.

A skillful soloist, versatile ensemble player and sensitive accompanist, Mark Eisenman received The Jazz Report Award for Acoustic Pianist of the Year in 1999. Although one of the busiest players in Toronto, he also conducts jazz workshops at York University.

Andre White’s debut CD as a drummer and composer, Signal, was cited as the 2001 jazz CD of the year in the Ottawa Citizen. In addition to his drum work with many of North America’s biggest names in jazz, White is a pianist, recording engineer and producer, and an associate professor of jazz studies at McGill University.

Bassist Neil Swainson’s career began with Paul Horn and Woody Shaw, grew during his years as a member of Moe Koffman’s quintet, then sped to fame during a decade of world tours and recording with George Shearing. He has played Calgary innumerable times.
